Random poll

OK, I need your help to understand something.

My friend, who is 26 and from a small town in Tennessee, has no knowledge of children's books and rhymes that I have known about for years. I'm trying to figure out if a)it's a regional thing; b)it's an age thing, or c)she and her family are just "out of it."

Since you all are different ages and from different parts of the country, you can help me!

Have you ever heard of the rhyme, "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" or the book, "The Monster at the End of This Book?" Because she hasn't, and it's hard for me to believe.

Yes to both. I am 34, and grew up in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. I am also a Librarian, but as a kid, my brothers and I did like to play "Five Little Monkeys" on an actual bed. Was that safe? I don't know, but I remember it being a lot of fun. I looked at and read "Monster at the End of this Book" so much that our copy fell apart. (I acquired a used copy in excellent shape years later, and also bought the board board version when it finally came out, for my oldest niece several years ago.)

Yes to both, and I grew up in Michigan. Its also known out here in New England, because I got both books as gifts for my son when he was little (and one was from a teacher).

Yup! I know them both. My 3-year-old loves to sing 5 Little Monkeys while jumping on his bed too!

Yes to Five little Monkeys, NO to the book!

I've heard of both, and I'm from Ohio. We had loads of books at our house. We would drive my mother insane with the monkeys rhyme, because it would get us jumping on the bed.

I'm 31 and outside Boston, and I've heard of both. The Monster at the End of this Book is about Grover, so I'm sure it's sold around the country. Isn't there Sesame Street everywhere? And I love that book!

I'm 38 and from Upstate NY, and I remembered the book vaguely but never heard of the "5 Monkeys" rhyme until I had kids of my own. And it's not like I was one of those born-under-a-rock-and-then-homeschooled-in-the-woods-without-TV kids, either. I went to the library all the time and we were the first house on the block to get this newfangled thing called CABLE in the 70s ...

Well I just turned 32 and am from Pennsylvania. We do the rhyme 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed all the time. Oh and we have the book The monster at the end of this book. I love that one!

Yes to both. I grew up in the suburbs of NYC.

We read the monster at the end of this book and the one that followed: ANOTHER monster at th end of this book -- both ours are the board book style.

Other rhymey books that I'm in love with are the Llama Llama series. My husband is so ignorant to my baby/kid book-loving and someone like him would never know these cute ones exist.
