In which I become a stereotype

I'm almost embarrassed to write this post.

Because, you see, in writing this post, I take a big step toward becoming a member of the Mommy Club. And while the club in question is a group I have desperately wanted to join, I also know what it's like to be on the outside looking in. I am especially sensitive to my readers who still are on the outside looking in.

However. I need some advice, and this is the easiest way I can think of (thank you all so much for your advice on snacks; I am slowly moving toward a slightly healthier diet, although ice cream is still my downfall).

We are in the process of registering and had picked out a highchair we thought would be great. However, after reading some of the reviews online, I'm not sure which ones to believe. Have any of you had experience with this highchair? And if you haven't, could you recommend a great, plastic (not wooden) highchair that's available at T.arget or Bab.ies .R U.s?

The main thing I have learned is the wipeable vinyl cover. And the recline because at 4 months old, they canot sit up alone in it to eat rice cereal. But this one looks like a great one!

That is the same one, different pattern, that I have... I LOVE LOVE it!! The best part is, it will withstand a pressure washer and if yours is a messy eater like mine, a very important feature!!

Mine had a toy, so that comment is bad. Its annoying, but its still a toy. (batteries are the devil ;)

The two hand remove the tray is true, but I like that for safety reasons. Its not nearly as hard as some comments, I fear some people don't read the instructions.

The removable tray works fine in my dishwasher, but with three + meals a day, I hand wash it anyway.

The buckles are hard to open, you have to squeeze tight. I am sure its a safety thing, but its very hard for my mom/MIL to use with their older hands. However, I still love mine.

It isn't terribly stable folded up, but I honestly don't know any that would be.

I personally like it. It does its job, it fits our space. Cleaning can be a pain, but we use our hose attachment or Shark and it gets plenty clean.

My two use the Fisher Price Space Saver highchair (they are half-size and fit onto all standard dining room chairs). I bought them at Target for about $45. They have vinyl covers that can be washed in the washing machine, optional one or two hand tray release (I do the 2 since I forget about it being onehanded) that can go in the dishwasher and the 3-position recline. Plus when you're ready for Baby Boy to sit at the dinner table with you, you can just take the tray off and use the seat as a booster up to the table.

That's the highchair we bought...but it's still in its box. Most of our friends have it and are pleased with it- that's why we went for it.

I have not used the one in question. We bought two highchairs. One we love, and the other we hate. We find the one that latches on the side rather than having to slide the tray in works much better. The vinyl cover is such a blessing, and the cloth one is a huge pain in the @ss to clean constantly.

Good luck!

I have a plastic high chair...but I have many friends who LOVE the fisher price space saver chair. It fits right onto one of your existing chairs.

Ann,
You have mommy brain already :-)
You cut paste sections of the post twice.
No suggestions, but watching this space closely for shopping suggestions.

We used that one with my 2 year old and I liked it just fine. It's easy to clean, it reclines and it folds up when you want to put it out of view.

We also have a Fisher Price Booster seat and those actually work pretty well too, and they are more flexible as to where you can sit them to eat.

The Chicco is a good choice though...

We have the Fisher Price healthy care high chair, which has worked very well for us. My favorite feature: multiple removable dishwasher safe tray inserts. This one looks very similar.

We have the Fisher Price Space Saver and it's worked well for us. Originally we registered for it when we lived in a smaller place, and we could probably accommodate a full-size high chair now, but the space saver is great (and converts to a booster for later). So if space is an issue at all, it might be a good alternative, though I'm sure the Chicco is great too.

Kind of off topic BUT … I started selecting registry items when I was about 4 month pregnant and generally used most items immediately after my daughter was born(bouncy seats, swing, pack n play) but by the time my daughter actually started eating solids there were about 5 new or slightly different high chair models that weren’t available in the giant baby store 11 months earlier … I really wasn’t fond of our high chair a year after selecting it and if I hadn’t already opened the box (and set up the chair a few weeks before we actually used it) I probably could have returned it for something I now liked better because …

What I did find is that the nearest B.ab. ies r us (New Hampshire) does not hassle you with product returns. I got a full merchandise credit (for the current store price) or exchanged many baby items for the “newer” model months later. My daughter is 19 months and now when I go to the giant baby store I notice which manufacturers change models/colors/styles often. MY experience is B. ab. ies r us was great taking returns in original unopened packaging (I registered there).

Happy for you!

Speaking as a mom with neatnik tendencies, I have come to hate the design of most traditional high chairs. I had one for Big A and used it faithfully during her high-chair years, but cleaning it was a constant, disgusting, lengthy process. The shoulder and lap straps, the reclining function, the chair cover -- things I was attracted to in a high chair when I had a tiny baby -- all became very annoying the older she got. That's because once kids start self feeding, every meal is incredibly messy. Shoulder straps soak up food, it gets caught in all sorts of chair nooks and works its way under the seat cover. So every meal required yanking the seat cover off to clean the top AND underneath, and it removing the belts and straps was very time consuming and made for quick wipe ups of messes pretty much impossible.

When Little A was six months old I bought a hard-plastic booster seat with a snap on tray. It was for a camping trip, but I liked it so much I've been using it for my primary high chair ever since. It cost 20 percent of what a regular high chair does, which is great. You can take it with you anywhere, which is handy. But the best thing about it is that it takes half the time to clean than my old high chair did. Hard plastic and a simple design = fast wiping. And for really big messes, the "travel friendly" feature of being able to break it down completely into 4 pieces is fabulous, because you can put the whole thing in the dishwasher -- even the straps.

I feel like I may be missing something...but with my oldest we had a recline-able high chair which was fine for when he was 4 months, but super annoying as he could sit up on his own. He was always slouched (sp?) over. I like the Eddie Bauer wooden one with the vinyl cover. Why not wooden? Just curious. I actually used the bouncy seat for those first few meals and that was great. I'm also a big fan of the fisher-price strap onto the kitchen chair one because it takes up a lot less space. Having said all of this, I do think I could be a fan of the one you're thinking of getting. (My first one was the palm tree one by baby trend...)

Good luck :)

well it's not available at those shops, but the ikea plastic high chair is great - and cheap.

It is all hard plastic, and is made of the seat, the tray and the 4 metal legs. It comes apart so you can take it in the car. And you can wipe down the whole lot - no cushions to dig pumpkin soup out of. You can even put the tray in the dishwasher.

We use the Fisher Price Space Saver high chair. It sits on top of a regular chair, or you can place it on the table or floor. It was a really good purchase. The cover is vinyl, so it makes cleaning up a lot easier. Good luck!
